Volleyball Clinics Launch in Partnership with Chester Boys & Girls Club

Yesterday was the first in a series of Youth Development United volleyball clinics led by Jean Moran, a long-time head coach with the local Royal Legends Volleyball Club.

Coach Moran was inspired by her team member Damola Songonuga, who wanted to help bring her favorite sport to the children of Chester.

Damola said, “Because of volleyball I have learned a lot of lessons that have really helped me navigate life and high school so far. Lessons such as how to overcome a bad day and stay positive, how to work as a team to accomplish a win, and how to encourage myself and others. Volleyball also gives me a sense of belonging. These are the things I want to share with other kids by  introducing volleyball to them through this program.”

Damola serves as a Junior Coach at the YDU clinics, leading many of the activities.

“I actually worked in Chester years ago and so the city has a special place in my heart. I’m happy to do anything I can to help out and give back. Plus, I really have a passion for volleyball and always want to get as many people playing as possible,“ commented Coach Moran.

YDU gratefully partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Chester in order to have a suitable gym for the clinics. Children from both organizations were invited to participate, and showed great enthusiasm.

One boy who showed a lot of promise with the new sport told Coach Moran that he watches Haikyuu!! anime, which is all about volleyball, and that he is very excited about actually having a chance to play.

Craig Haywood, Athletic Director for the Boys & Girls Club of Chester, stated, “We want the children of Chester to get to experience as many positive activities as we can.”

The YDU volleyball clinics will continue May 24, June 7 and hopefully beyond.
