Summer Activities Include Martial Arts, Cycling, Nature Walks, Soccer, Volleyball, MiniGolf and Bowling

Youth Development United and partners are in the process of kicking off what is sure to be a fun summer for all.

Free martial arts classes are already underway each Saturday at 1:30pm at Widener University Center. Later this summer, classes will also be offered at Chester’s CAAT Center and Keystone First Wellness Center.

Thanks to YDU’s Bike Rodeos, over 300 bicycles have been distributed in Chester, and over 120 people have been taught how to ride. In partnership with the 9th St Youth & Community Center, bikes are being given away regularly all summer long. The Center is located at peaceful Eyre Park, a beautiful place to ride, walk, sit, play and enjoy nature.

Additional opportunities to enjoy nature are being encouraged in partnership with Swarthmore College’s Scott Arboretum, retired Widener professor Nadine McHenry, Nature Under Your Nose leader David Greaves, Delaware County’s 4-H team, and other outdoor enthusiasts who are leading a variety of programs for our group.

Soccer remains one of our core offerings, and this summer we are coaching at a variety of locations including CCSA, Better Tomorrows, Fairgrounds Community and Main St Elementary. Thanks to encouragement from our community survey, we also hope to offer mentored pickup soccer on Friday and Sunday evenings.

This is our second summer working with a volleyball coach. So far she is lined up to share her skills at Eddystone Borough Camp, and there are plans upderway to also bring her into Chester for some fun sessions.

We are also in discussions with art and dance instructors, hoping to bring their expertise to the children we serve.

Minigolf and bowling parties have become two of our group’s favorite ways to gather, and we’ve got such events lined up once each month of the summer, continuing our recently created tradition.

In addition to YDU programs, participants are encouraged to also attend the great activities offered by local libraries, the Keystone First Wellness Center, Sow Good Now and other wonderful community partners.
