STEM Fun Adds to Summer Success

Youth Development United is grateful to have a longstanding partnership with the Widener University community. Since the start of our organization, Widener students have often served as Coach-Mentors in our after-school soccer program at local elementary schools. A variety of faculty and staff have played valuable roles in exposing our children to their areas of expertise in our Career Discovery program and made us feel welcome enjoying gathering spaces on the beautiful campus.

This summer, Youth Development United has strengthened its connection with Widener’s Science Teaching Center, bringing its educators to share a love of science, engineering and math with our young people as part of their participation in summer programs taking place at Eddystone’s Lighthouse Hall and Chester’s FiDonce Player Development Center.

Professors Nadine McHenry, Ria Mazumder, Liz DiScala, Steve Madigosky and Andy Owens are generously giving their time to the children, providing stimulating and fun “brain breaks” in rest periods between more physically active sessions. This is making for a very well-rounded summer, and setting participants up for enthusiasm for future lessons in STEM fields.

Later this summer, YDU will further its inclusion of science at its soccer/nature camp at Main Street Elementary, being held in collaboration with Delaware County’s 4-H Club.

If you have a skill or interest that you’d love to share, please consider donating your time to the children of Youth Development United too. Everyone can make a difference!

Hi Jeannine! Sumer camp was awesome and I could not have done it without you and the help of your partners. I can’t thank you enough.
