A Day at the Zoo With YDU

Children learn about zoos in books and movies, but not everyone is lucky enough to visit one. Thanks to Kim D’Ambrosio and family, and other generous donors, a group of Main Street Elementary schoolers who participate in Chester Upland Youth Soccer/Youth Development United programming were able to enjoy a trip to the Elmwood Park Zoo. The Chester Upland School District provided a bus to Norristown as well as a packed lunch for all.

Highlights of the zoo trip included seeing the birds of the rainforest, alpacas, zebras, sea lions and a bison. Many kids also enjoyed petting the goats in the farmhouse area. After lunch, a zookeeper gathered us together for a show featuring close-ups of a turtle and a skunk (whose scent glands had been removed.) She warned us that giraffes sometimes like to peek over the fence to watch the show, and sure enough, one came along as if on cue!

Everyone who attended is sure to remember our wonderful day at the zoo.
