Rained Out Event Allows YDU to Pay it Forward
If Saturday, March 15 had been a sunny, warm day, Youth Development United would have hosted Party in the Park.
Community partners were lined up and raring to help create another great day for Chester families at Eyre Park. Keep Music Alive would have hosted their beloved Musical Instrument Petting Zoo. Widener University’s Physical Therapy department would have created a sidewalk chalk obstacle course and led a nature scavenger hunt. Girls in Gear would have provided bike loans and riding lessons. Matt Ralph of Snapology would have brought suitcases full of Legos, and inspired some creative building. Todd Price of Legacy Land & Water would have taught and facilitated fishing. Widener University STEM professors were ready to teach about photosynthesis and send everyone home with their own small planting. Duo Taco and Just Pizza were prepared to deliver lunch.
But, the March weather didn’t cooperate. Quick communication that morning allowed all the day’s wonderful plans to dissolve into thin air - all except the bulk order of fruit provided a a discount by Swarthmore Co-Op. Youth Development United picked up the fruit before the cancellation was deemed necessary. So, what to do with 300 pieces of fresh, ready-to-eat fruit?
YDU had become aware that environmental justice activists at CRCQL were hosting a community health event that day at the ACCESS Center. It was Youth Development United’s pleasure to encourage the community to enjoy that event instead, and donated the fruit to be given out there. Asthma activist Carolyn Tillery graciously accepted the donation and welcomed the YDU representatives and familes who came by.
In other great news, Party in the Park has been rescheduled for April 26. Thanks to all for your partnership and support.
