Latest Career Discovery Day Features Chester Firefighter and Widener Nursing/Health Students

Being aware of yourself is a path to improvement. Our Career Discovery Days introduce paths and encourage self-awareness and other forms of education.

February 22, 2025 was a Career Discovery Day to remember.

The kids spent time in different rotations, learning about bones, the nervous system, and medical issues that affect certain systems in our body, and how medical experts help patients. Each station was interactive, fun, and engaging, creating an overall wonderful experience for the children and families in attendance. Who knew that the neuron is like a waterslide in a water park?!

Dr. Lori Felker and her team of Widener students (listed below) from both the School of Nursing and the College of Health & Human Services made each station lively and educational. With the kids fully engaged from start to finish, staying behind to ask questions after each station, the volunteers were enthusiastically involved in leading the activities.

Great thanks also to Chester native Donye Price for not only her hard work as a firefighter but for her time to inspire during the children’s rotation into her session. She gave the kids a chance to try on the gear used to save lives every day, and she also shared stories and her book Girls Can Be FireFighters Too. Afterward, Donye reported, “My heart is so full. They were asking me for autographs!”

Special thanks to Leveling the Playing Field and Swarthmore College's Women's Tennis Team for their donation of sports equipment for the participants to bring home.

Finishing the day with dinner at Widener's DIning Hall, the favorite meal from the ample buffet seemed to be the burgers this time around. The students continued to talk about their experiences and goals with each other and their parents.

Dr. Lori Felker described the day: “Ultimately what I observed on Saturday were smiling faces, lots of laughter, active listening, engagement, lots of jumping up and down, and happy squeals.”

Thank you so much to Dr. Lori Felker and the following crew: Grace LePage, Megan Aube, Manny Miranda, Rachel Murphy, Jaclyn Pollan , Darby Fuller , Lauren Riga, Cole Clute, Lauren Shteinberg, Reese Thorne, Lauren Beccaria, Donna Campbell, Leslie Jabloner, and Professor Paynter who showed up early and stayed late to help set up and clean up! We couldn’t have made this special day happen without all your efforts.
