Monthly Bowling Parties are a Ball for YDU Families

As of August 2022, Youth Development United hosts a monthly bowling party for families whose children qualify for free or reduced school lunch because of their economic situation.

At each bowling party, all family members are invited to bowl two games, enjoy a free dinner together and bring home a care package of healthy and useful items. The bowling party concept was originally conceived by the Kennedy family of Wallingford who has been very supportive of the organization’s effort to provide memorable experiences that can sometimes be difficult for families to create when under economic stress.

For a number of children, the YDU party provided their very first exposure to bowling. Many families have returned for more than one party.

YDU enjoyed having a special guest at its October party: Ms. Sharon Moore of The Community’s Foundation, who brought a box of books for the children to choose from, courtesy of The Kara Barnard Youth Literacy Fund.

In between frames, the children got quite absorbed in the books. “What a great way to wait their turn!” exclaimed one parent.
